Faculty of Environmental Sciences
The Faculty of the Environmental Sciences is one of the first four pioneer faculties in the University. The Faculty was formally instituted in 1990 when the University was established, with late Prof. S. O. A. Adesina as the foundation Dean.It is to offer programmes in Architecture, Fine and Applied Arts, and Urban and Regional Planning. The foundation department in the faculty is the Department of Architecture, established in 1990. The two other departments were established in 1992.
The twenty three foundation students were admitted for the Architecture programme in 1990. The first sets of students for the Fine and applied Arts and Urban and Regional Planning programmes were admitted in the 1992/93 session. The first set of graduates, 13 in all and mainly from Architecture Department, was produced in 1996. Since then till date the faculty has produced a total of 537 graduates.
Postgraduate programmes commenced in the faculty effectively at the beginning of 2001/2002. There are currently four postgraduate diploma programmes: PGD in Art History; Fine Arts; Applied Arts and Urban and Regional Planning, and four postgraduate degree programmes: M.Tech in Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning and Fine/Applied Arts, and M.Phil and Ph.D in all the departments. From programmes inception a total of 16 postgraduate students have been produced mainly at the Masters level.
Physical Development
The Faculty is temporarily being accommodated in a number of separated buildings. Since its inception and till date, the temporary Faculty building, adjacent to the Department of Mathematics and the College of Medicine Laboratories, houses the Dean's Office, the Head of Department and, some staff members of Fine and Applied Arts. The offices of the three departments had also been housed in the Faculty building until 1994 when Urban and Regional Planning moved to its present location beside the Works Department. The two Architecture studios became available in 1991 but were not completed till 1992.The new Architecture building was completed, furnished and occupied in 2004. The Fine and Applied Arts, and the Urban and Regional Planning Studios became available in 1994. This was later made to be meant for Fine and Applied Arts only, when a two- studio block with six staff offices was donated to Urban and Regional Planning Department by a philanthropist, Prince (Dr) Abidoye Ayoola. Another block, formerly used by Pre-degree Science students, has just been partitioned into three and currently being used by the Urban and Regional Planning department as studios and offices. A prefabricated building, painting studio, was recently completed for the department of fine and Applied Arts. The plan for the construction of 1000 faculty lecture theatre and a permanent building for the Faculty of the Environmental Sciences (office and studio complex) has reached an advanced stage.
Philosophy of the Faculty
The aims of the Faculty are, among others, to serve as agency for development through research into areas of modernization of indigenous technologies in relation to socio-economic and cultural realities of the world; and to educate and graduate students with adequate academic background integrated with sufficient technological and field training necessary for the challenges of environmental development and management. This is in line with the University's philosophy which is to produce graduates that are well grounded in the basic theoretical and practical aspects of their disciplines. Emphasis is placed on how to identify problems and opportunities; innovation and invention; effective and efficient utilization of production resources for optimum effect; and self-reliance. To this end, all the programmes in the Faculty are technological and computer-oriented. The Faculty also works closely with cognate faculties within the University, and agencies concerned with the environmental sciences within and outside Nigeria.
