History of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH)

Background and Establishment

Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) is a public research university located in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, Nigeria. It was established on 23 April 1990 to meet the increasing demand for technological education in Nigeria. The university was created with the vision of becoming a center of excellence in the field of technology, producing quality graduates capable of making significant contributions to national development.

LAUTECH was initially known as Oyo State University before its rebranding in 1991 after the creation of Osun State. The university officially opened its doors on 19 October 1990, with an inaugural intake of 436 students.

Founding and Early History

The establishment of LAUTECH was a direct response to the growing need for specialized and quality education in the field of technology, aimed at advancing Nigeria’s educational standards and workforce.

The government of Oyo State under Governor Adetunji Olurin approved the establishment of the university after an interministerial committee, chaired by Mrs. Oyinkan Ayoola, reviewed the educational needs of the state. The committee’s recommendations led to the creation of LAUTECH, with a focus on offering academic programs in science and technology disciplines.

Expansion and Growth

Over the years, LAUTECH has grown into one of Nigeria’s leading technological universities, offering diverse programs across its six faculties: Engineering, Science, Social Sciences, Health Sciences, Environmental Science, and Management Science.

Initially, the university operated from a temporary campus until 1999, when it moved to its permanent location in Ogbomoso, Oyo State. The university’s infrastructure, academic programs, and student population continued to grow in the ensuing decades, positioning LAUTECH as a leader in the field of higher education.

International Partnerships and Research

LAUTECH has established numerous international collaborations with universities and research institutions worldwide. These partnerships have facilitated student exchanges, joint research, and academic development, enhancing the university’s global reputation.
